Judge Patricia Goliath has described the murder of two police officers in Hout Bay last year as one of the most serious crimes the Western Cape High Court has ever dealt with, says a Cape Times report.
Phindiwe Nikani (26) and her colleague Mandisi Nduku (27) were gunned down after a quarrel with their killer, Fabianus Fillipus (29), about having to move his car out of their way so they could continue with a patrol. The judge yesterday sentenced Fillipus to two life terms and an additional five years for the unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition. 'The callousness, cruelty and brutality of the attack on the two police officers place this matter into the category of the most serious cases this court has ever dealt with. The crimes were heinous in the extreme,' Goliath is reported to have said. Nikani and Nduku had been shot in the head in an 'execution-style' attack, notes the report. The judge said she found it 'particularly disturbing' that half an hour after the row about his car, which had blocked the path of the police van, he'd returned with a firearm to execute his 'grudge attack'. This meant he had had some time to reflect, indicating a clear case of pre-planning. Full Cape Times report (subscription needed)
