Former police commissioner Jackie Selebi is now being sued for R40m, says a report in The New Age.
It adds he will also have to pay the legal fees to defend the lawsuit instituted against him by private investigator Paul O'Sullivan. According to documents filed in the South Gauteng High Court by Leonard Singer Attorneys, Selebi and Airports Company SA (Acsa) are both being sued for R40m worth of damages. O'Sullivan claims in the court papers that in 2003, Selebi and former Acsa CEO Monhla Hlahla colluded to have him fired as head of security at OR Tambo International Airport - after he raised concerns about security flaws at the airport under the watch of a security company whose services were later terminated as a result of his intervention. According to the documents, O'Sullivan suffered a massive blow to his reputation, which left him unemployable and he lost income as a result. The report notes he claims to have suffered emotional shock and trauma and that he went into hiding after several attempts were made on his life. According to the report, O'Sullivan is demanding R2m for pain and suffering, R4m reputation damage and more than R36m for his calculated expected income he could not earn as a result of the actions of both defendants.
