Incumbent Peter Mutharika is leading Malawi's election with over 40% of valid votes cast against the main opposition Malawi Congress Party’s Lazarus Chakwera with 35%. Mutharika, in office since 2014, has faced accusations of corruption and cronyism. Chakwera has campaigned on an anti-graft platform. The Malawi Elections Commission last night said it had received more that 95% of presidential results. Commission chairperson Jane Ansah said one petition has been dismissed while results from one region had been quarantined pending a probe. A report on the Africa News site notes that it is not known which party launched the petition and for contravention of which electoral regulation. A TimesLIVE report notes that Chakwera said his party is conducting its own count, even though local observers earlier declared the election largely free and fair. Former South Africa President, Thabo Mbeki, who is chairperson of the Commonwealth Observer Group, yesterday said the election has so far been handled with 'professionalism and dedication'. A report on the IoL site notes that Mbeki said although the initial pace of tallying was slow, the observer group will continue to follow progress in the days ahead. He stressed the importance of the commission being given the time and space to conclude its work.
