Four men in Nigeria's northern city of Kano have received death threats for planning a mock wedding on Facebook that was deemed offensive to Islam. This after Sanusi Abdullahi confessed to 'jokingly' offering a female Facebook member $50 for her hand in marriage during their 'online' exchange. His friends also contributed to the online banter. BBC News reports that religious leaders said it was a mockery of the institution of marriage. Kano is among 12 northern states where Islamic law, or Sharia, operates, implemented by religious police. 'In Islam, only wayward ladies marry out themselves without their parents or guardians giving her out to her suitor,' said Sheik Nazifi Inuwa.
