US President Donald Trump has stirred international condemnation after tweeting some Democrat congresswomen from countries ‘whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe’ should ‘go back and help fix the totally broken and crime-infested places from which they came’. According to a report in The Independent, while it was not explicitly clear to whom the US President was referring, it came after he launched an extraordinary attack on Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ilhan Omar – both women of colour – saying he ‘doesn’t even know where they came from’. He tweeted: ‘So interesting to see “Progressive” Democrat Congresswomen, who originally came from countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe, the worst, most corrupt and inept anywhere in the world (if they even have a functioning government at all), now loudly and viciously telling the people of the US, the greatest and most powerful nation on earth, how our government is to be run’. Trump had claimed Ocasio-Cortez and Omar were among a group of Democrats being ‘disrespectful’ to Nancy Pelosi, the House speaker. Pelosi herself condemned the President’s ‘xenophobic comments meant to divide our nation’. Pelosi also used the row to attack the immigration raids across US cities this weekend, posting: ‘Rather than attack Members of Congress, he should work with us for humane immigration policy that reflects American values. Stop the raids.’
